Sales blunder keeps McCartney charity single out of charts
Nov 15, 2001
Paul McCartney's new charity single has failed to make
the charts because of a technicality. Sales of the song Freedom weren't
counted because it had From A Lover To A Friend as its B-side. That track
had also previously been released as a single the week before and was
still in the charts. The Official UK Chart Company told The Sun it had
not even been made aware of the second release, which had the same catalogue
number as From A Lover To a Friend. "It is not on any of our records
and we were not aware that it was out last Monday," said a spokeswoman.
A spokesman for McCartney told The Sun: "Obviously we are disappointed
as this song was to raise money for the widows and orphans of firemen
and police officers affected by the attack. "Paul's Concert For New
York raised a lot of money but unfortunately that has not been followed
up. We are hoping things will be different when the song is released in
America."
