U2 and Alicia Keys lead the Grammy nominations

Jan 26, 2002

Grammy voters didn't leave U2 behind this year: The resurgent Irish rockers lead the pack of nominees for the 2001 awards, followed by underdog neo-soul act India.Arie and the better-known newcomer Alicia Keys. U2 picked up a total of eight nods for ''All That You Can't Leave Behind,'' while India.Arie garnered seven and Keys six. The nominees in the top category, Album of the Year, are ''All That You Can't Leave Behind,'' India.Arie's ''Acoustic Soul,'' Bob Dylan's ''Love and Theft,'' Outkast's ''Stankonia,'' and the bluegrass-packed soundtrack for ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' Keys' ''Songs in A Minor'' picked up a Best R&B Vocal Album nomination, but was snubbed for Album of the Year.

In the Best New Artist category, Keys and India.Arie will go up against eclectic singer/songwrtiter Nelly Furtado, balladeer David Gray, and rap-rockers Linkin Park. For Record of the Year (which honors the performance of a single song), India.Arie's ''Video'' will compete with Keys' ''Fallin','' Outkast's ''Ms. Jackson,'' Train's ''Drops of Jupiter,'' and U2's ''Walk On.'' For Song of the Year (which honors songwriters instead of performers), ''Drops of Jupiter,'' ''Fallin','' and ''Video'' will battle it out with U2's ''Stuck in A Moment You Can't Get Out Of'' and Furtado's ''I'm Like A Bird.'' The 2001 Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from Los Angeles February 27 on CBS.
